Domain Name
Registration FAQ's
a) Don't pay too little for a
domain name. Yes that is what I said, too
little. All accredited domain name "Registrars" pay the same
price for domain names which is $6.00. If you find a
"Registrar" offering them for less you can bet their is a
catch. Example -you must host your web site with them at a
high price. Or you have to pay extra to forward your domain to
another host. Or when you renew next year the price triples
and the list goes on and on.
b) Don't pay too much for a
domain name - On the other hand don't pay the big boys like
Register.com $35.00 to register your domain name either who will
then turn around and charge you more money to forward it unless you
host it with them.
c) See what is included when you
register your domain- Is there an extra cost for
"forwarding", "domain name locking", "email forwarding
accounts"?

FAQ's
Tip #1 -
Get your OWN domain name example
www.JanesPetSitting.com
Do not go for web designers who say they will give
you THEIR domain name.
Example www.abcvets.com/petsitter/janespetsitting/index.html Can you image how
hard that would be to put on your business card or to tell someone
over the phone!
Tip #2 -
Don't go for "so called" free web sites for 2
reasons.
First,
it will not be your domain name again.
Second,
it will
have "pop-up" ads all over it for mortgage companies, casino, and
heaven knows what else that may offend a potential customer. Not very professional
looking for a business and may even cause you to lose
business. Remember, you are a professional
now.
Tip #3 -
Make sure you know the cost of hosting & domain name
registration –
If you go with a web site design company make
sure you read the fine print.
Does the web site design price
include domain name registration and
hosting or is that
extra.
Tip #4 -
What is the YEARLY fee going to cost your for the following
–
Your web site, domain registration renewal, and
hosting. Make sure you
ask these questions because these are not one time fees, they will
occur every year.
Tip #5 -
How much will page additions and changes cost you
–
This is
where some designers get you.
Either you cannot add pages or the costs are
outrageous. Again read
the fine print or ask.
Tip #6 - How long after you request
a change will it take to get on the web
-
Some companies have no time guarantees and could take weeks or even
months to put up a change for you. In the meantime this could
lose you business, ESPECIALLY if you are changing your email address
or business phone number!
Tip #7 -
You may NOT want your friend or relative to design your site
–
We all know someone who knows how to make a web
site. Some will even do it for free so how could that be a
problem for you? First, if they do not do it for a living
they are doing it as a hobby. Since they will not be doing this
during work hours when will they really have time
to work on it. Next week, next month, I know sitters who are still
waiting for the kid down the block to set up their web
site. When you want to change or update
your site will they be available? Will they take the time with
you or will they be too busy with their own job and life, which is
quite natural you know---------something to think
about.
Tip # 8 - I don't have email or a
computer so I cannot have a web site
-
WRONG. A web site is
an "advertisement" for your business just like an ad in a newspaper
or a brochure at a pet shop. All you need is a business phone
number for them to contact you. If you do not have a web site
you are losing money to sitters who do.
Hosting
FAQ's
1. Most Pet Sitting web sites are
generally simple 1 to 5 pages of text and a few graphics, maybe a
fill in form. If this is the case with your web site do not
spend a great deal of money to host it. Most reliable hosting
companies are are around $3.95 per month with deals if you pay for 1
year in advance.
2. If you have extremely complicated
programming on your web site you may need more hosting capabilities
but you might want to ask yourself "why" is your web site so
complicated. Pet Sitting web sites should just be a quick
reference for pet owners to get quick information. Not wait
hours for them to load complicated graphics, flash etc which will
probably cause them to click off your site and on to a competitors
anyway.
Hosting Service Suggestion - www.DomainPup.com
Cost is $3.95 per month or $3.16 per month if
