In the past, getting a merchant account
to accept credit cards was a huge hassle and very expensive.
However with the invention of the internet all that has changed.
The list below is all you need to open up a merchant account so
you can accept credit card payments from your clients.
- Business checking account
- Email address (cannot be a free one like
Hotmail or Yahoo though)
- Social Security Number
- $35.00
That is it!
Advantages
- Sitters report a substantial increase in income when they
offer clients option to pay by credit card
- It can be more convenient way to pay for your client
- Clients may book more sits
- Client will probably chose you over sitter that does not
accept credit cards
- It gives a professional image to your to your business when
you give clients options on how to pay
Disadvantages
- Credit card company will take 3.1% of each transaction
- Credit card company will take .35 cents each time you deposit
to your checking account
- If you want to process more than $1,000.00 of transaction in
one month they will require a $250.00 refundable deposit
- Chargeback
A client could ask for what is called a "charge back" if they did
not like your service. Meaning you would have to take time out
to email the company and explain your position. If they did
not agree with you it would be like a 'stop payment' on a check.
Most sitters report a real increase in their business once they
started taking credit cards which more than offset the transaction
fees. And chargebacks like stop payments were rare.
